HMS Richmond was honoured to spend a week alongside in Cardiff as the Royal Naval focal point for the Cadet 150 celebrations in Wales, marking the 150th anniversary of the Reserve Forces and Cadet Association (RFCA).

The celebrations were officially opened on Wednesday 13 May as the Naval Regional Commander, Commodore Jamie Miller CBE, unveiled a banner on the flight deck.

The event took place in the full glare of the local media and was accompanied by music from no less than three cadet force bands.

The Ship had a busy programme of hosting cadet visits, a capability demonstration, official reception and on board training for the local RNR unit at HMS Cambria.

HMS Richmond was also opened up to members of the public as part of a full Ship Open to Visitors day and local Cadets of all three Services were given the opportunity to spend a night on board to sample life in a warship.

HMS Richmond enjoyed pride of place, berthed a stones throw away from the Opera House and the Welsh National Assembly, right amongst the frenetic activity of the recently rejuvenated dock area with parts of the city still undergoing an extensive rejuvenation and no shortage of restaurants, bars, clubs and sights for all to enjoy.

The local population seemed to like having a warship on their doorstep and took full advantage of the Ship Open to Visitors day on Sunday to have a good look round at the many displays that had been set up.

HMS Richmond left Cardiff with its sights now firmly set on continuation training; practicing damage control and weapons drills at sea before its next port call.

As a fully operational warship these skills must remain current and well practiced in order that the Ship is ready to take on whatever tasking she may be given.
