In many ways, the Infantry is the Army. It spearheads any front-line action, bearing the brunt of the fighting.
At the Infantry's disposal are the finest weapons, communications technology and transportation, and the TA Infantry has the training to use it all.

The first priority of the Infantry is to be a fighting force, ready for action whenever necessary.
A conflict can take the Infantry to anywhere in the world, dealing with all types of terrain, extremes of climate and tactical situations.

Infantry soldiers and officers cope with this and come out the other side for two major reasons:
- The first is that the training really does prepare you for the job.
- The second is the confidence you take from the constant knowledge that you have the support, friendship and trust and understanding of your fellow Infantrymen, whatever the situation you find yourself in.

Wherever people or communities are in trouble or difficulty following human conflict or natural disaster, the Infantry has a role to play.
Territorial Army Reservists find themselves in different parts of the globe in support of their regular army counterparts.
The battalion have deployed soldiers worldwide including Afghanistan, Iraq, Sierra Leone, The Balkans and land exercises in Africa, Canada, North America and eastern Europe.

The Royal Welsh is a three battalion regiment which formed up on St. Davids Day, 1st March 2006 in Cardiff.
The 1st and 2nd Battalions are regular and formed from The Royal Welch Fusiliers and The Royal Regiment of Wales respectively.
The 3rd Battalion The Royal Welsh is the Territorial Army Battalion formed from the current Royal Welsh Regiment and which carries forward the high traditions of volunteer service to The Crown.
The regiment recruits throughout the Principality and is proud of the fact that its soldiers have served with distinction in Iraq and more recently in Afghanistan.

Regimental HQ is in Maindy Barracks, Cardiff and company/platoon locations are at Pontypridd, Swansea, Wrexham, Colwyn Bay, Caernarfon and Queensferry.
3rd Battalion The Royal Welsh is renowned as one of only a very few with Regimental Goats - currently represented by Shenkin from South Wales, officially listed as Private Shenkin Jenkins. The soldiers appointed by the regiment as keeper and trainer are known as the Goat Majors.
The wild billy goat (once quite common across Wales) is hardy, stubborn and, when confronted, aggressive.
|
 |
It can live off the land in the most inhospitable climates - character traits that were, and still are, desirable in a soldier.
Since the time of Queen Victoria, the custom has been to provide the goats from the Royal Herd in Great Windsor Park.
Goats have often accompanied the Battalions on active service and were, when applicable, awarded the appropriate service or campaign medals.
