The University of Wales Air Squadron (UWAS) is based at RAF St Athan near Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan.
The squadron’s role is to provide flying training to British student’s recruited from the University of Wales Colleges at Cardiff, Swansea, Newport, Aberystwyth and Bangor as well as the University of Glamorgan and the University College of Medicine.
Students are trained by RAF and RAFVR instructors to a high standard beyond the requirement for a private pilot’s licence, including glider training with 634 Volunteer Gliding Squadron, MoD St Athan.
University Air Squadrons are responsible for delivering 60% of the RAF’s pilot intake each year, all of whom will have completed the elementary flying training course while at university.
The comprehensive training enables members to fly aircraft and undertake navigation exercises, aerobatics and formation flying, so members can spend their time at 5000 feet practicing aerobatics or flying through the Welsh mountains at 500 feet.
As well as flying instruction, squadron members organise and take part in many sports and adventure training activities.
