54 Military Intelligence Company (Volunteers) Newport Detachment
54 Military Intelligence Company (Volunteers) is tasked with providing Operational Intelligence (OPINTEL) support to 4 Military Intelligence Battalion (UK) and is based in S W England and Wales.
|
|
The HQ and main body of the company are based in Keynsham, near Bristol with smaller detachments based in Exeter and in Newport, South Wales.
Int Corps officers and soldiers are trained as Operators Military Intelligence (OPMI) with their core skill being the conduct of OPINTEL enabling them to be deployed in support of any MI organisation from Battle Group to Force level formations.
Their Special to Role training requires them to work alongside regular Int Corps General Support units, providing longer term intelligence analysis and support to Brigade, Divisional or Force Commanders and 54 MI Coy (V) has developed a close working relationship with 4 MI Bn, routinely training and exercising alongside it’s regular counterparts.
All personnel must first pass the 2 day Technical Selection course held six times per year at Chicksands before they start training with those joining straight from civilian life taking around 10-12 months to complete Phase 1 (Basic Recruit) and Phase 2 (Int Corps Trade) training before emerging as an Int Corps Lance Corporal.

The Company is approximately 80 strong and training takes place weekly on Tuesdays (Exeter and Newport) and Wednesdays (Keynsham), with at least one company training weekend each month, primarily conducted in England.
Mobilisation for an operational deployment is very much a likelihood for personnel, 12 months after completing Phase 2 Training and on average the company has approximately 5-10 personnel deployed at any given moment.
If you are interested in doing something that little bit different and more challenging, then why not contact us on 01179 862122 to arrange a visit us to Keynsham, Exeter or Newport. We are particularly interested in ex-regular or serving TA Junior Officers (2Lt- Capt) and SNCOs who are looking for something different and challenging.
We are looking for sharp thinking men and women who will commit time and energy to the TA and are keen to pursue a career in the organisation, either as a soldier or as a commissioned officer.
You will need to:
- Have good common sense, be physically fit and have a high degree of integrity, intelligence and inquisitiveness.
- Hold at least 5 GCSEs Grade A – C (including Mathematics and English Language).
- Have held British Citizenship for a minimum of 10 years and been resident in the UK for at least 10 years in order to meet security criteria.
- Commit to a minimum of 27 days training/year including a period of 15 days consecutive training on a camp, on a career or trade course or on attachment to a regular Int Corps unit.
Potential recruits are interviewed by the local MI Company and if deemed to have the correct aptitude and meet the criteria will be sent on a 2 day selection course held 6 times a year.
On passing the selection course, recruits will conduct their Phase 1 training (basic military skills) before attempting Phase 2 (Int Corps) training.
